Ilkley Moor Fell Race
The Ilkley Moor Fell Race has been staged by Ilkley Harriers every year since 1990. It is a technical fell race on Ilkley Moor that features steep, slippery and rocky descents across rough terrain.
The senior course is 8 km (about 5 miles) with 401 metres of ascent and is classified as an FRA Category AS race. The event is ER (experience required) and PM (part-marked). Runners must follow course marker flags and marshals on race day. There is a one hour cut-off at the Rocky Valley marshal point, roughly halfway along the route; runners outside this limit will be instructed to retire.
The route leaves Wells Road, passes The Tarn, crosses Backstone Beck and goes between the Cow and Calf, up to the Pancake Stone, down into Rocky Valley and along the skyline above Ilkley, via Barmishaw Hole and the Badger Stone, dropping back toward the finish after Weary Hill and Spicey Gill. Race HQ is at Wells Road, Ilkley (OS grid ref SE117471, nearest postcode LS29 9RF); the HQ is about a ten minute walk from Ilkley train and bus stations. Approaches by car should use Ilkley rather than Keighley Gate Road.
The event is run under FRA rules. Competitors must carry the FRA minimum kit including waterproof whole body cover with taped seams and an attached hood, hat, gloves and a whistle. GPS or similar navigation devices are not permitted and random kit checks will take place.
Junior races are held on the same day with on-the-day entry and separate registration. Runners must be 16 or over for the senior race; under-18s who entered online must present parental consent at registration.
Trophies are awarded to first man and first woman. Prize categories include top places by age groups and team awards. Images taken during the event may be used to promote future races.
