Path Of The Flood Historic Races
The Path of the Flood Historic Races is an annual running event in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, that commemorates the Great Flood of 1889. The course follows the actual path taken by the floodwaters through several communities, including South Fork, Mineral Point, and the local boroughs. Participants travel on a hybrid course consisting of both roads and rail trails.
The event features three distinct distances:
- 14 Miles
- 8 Miles
- 5K
The 14-mile and 8-mile courses include a passage through the Staple Bend Tunnel, which was the first railroad tunnel constructed in the United States. All races conclude at the Old Stone Bridge, a historic structure that remained standing after the 1889 flood. The event is part of the larger Cambria County Trails Series.
This event is organized by a partnership between the Cambria County Conservation & Recreation Authority and Heritage Johnstown. Registration fees are non-refundable and serve as a donation to the CCCRA Friends of the Trails program. These funds are used to maintain and improve the trail systems within Cambria County and to support the preservation of local history. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
