4th Annual #OptOutside Black Friday Fun Run
The event is a community Black Friday 5K on the Michael N. Castle Trail in Bear, DE, held on Black Friday, November 27, 2026. It is organized to support Plastic Free Delaware and its educational and waste-reduction programs.
The event includes these options:
- 5K Run / Walk (in-person)
- Competitive Walking 5K (walk only)
- Virtual 5K (submit results)
- Kids Race for ages 8 and under
The course is traffic-free and paved, following the Mike Castle Trail along the C&D Canal and including the Castle Crusher Switchback. The trailhead is located near Grain H2O and Summit Marina; parking is free in the upper lot above Grain H2O.
This event emphasizes zero-waste practices. Organics will be collected for composting, recyclables will be recycled, refill stations are provided and participants are encouraged to use reusable water bottles. Bibs will be assorted leftovers from other runs and all event swag and awards are eco-friendly. Sustainable swag is reserved for the first 200 registered participants. Post-race refreshments will include fruit and drinks.
Awards include a Green Team Award for the largest team of finishers, top overall and masters awards with Delaware State Parks passes, age-group awards, walking awards, and a treat for the kids race. Chip timing uses the MYLAPS BibTag system and results will be posted online. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
