Oconee County Memorial Day 5K
The event is a Memorial Day weekend 5K in downtown Walhalla that supports local veterans and honors those who served. It is hosted by the Golden Corner Veterans Support Group, a 501(c)(3) established by Oconee County Emergency Services and staffed by volunteers from OCES and the Oconee County Veterans Council.
The course is a 5K for running, walking, or rolling. Participants may push a friend in a wheelchair. Packet pickup takes place inside the Oconee County History Museum, which provides restroom facilities including handicap-accessible options. Brown Square at 105 West Main Street provides green space, paved parking, and access to the museum. The Bantom Chef drive-through is located on the front west corner of the paved parking lot.
Registration fees are set by participant category: adults 13 and up $30, veterans $20, and children 12 and under $15. A challenge coin is reserved for the first 200 registrations. The event offers optional carrying challenges labeled Glory, Endure, and Warrior; examples include carrying an American or POW flag, carrying a 45 pound backpack, or carrying another person.
Awards include medals for the top three female and male finishers and the top three in the 12 and under category. The program also includes a Silent Litter Carry walk to honor the "22 a day" initiative, with a stop at Memorial Park for a moment of remembrance, and a separate Memorial Ceremony at the Walhalla Performing Arts venue. Sponsor levels include Bronze at $100 and Silver at $250 with day of race and marketing benefits. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
