13th Annual Norma E. Boyd 5K Race for Education
The Norma E. Boyd 5K Race for Education is an annual event held in Washington, D.C. Hosted by the Xi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. in collaboration with the Pearl and Ivy Educational Foundation (PIEF), the event commemorates the life and work of Norma E. Boyd. The race serves as a fundraiser to support college scholarships for high school students in the District of Columbia. Since its inception in 2013, the event has raised over $118,000 for educational initiatives.
Participants can choose from the following event options:
- 5K Race for Education: A 3.1 mile running race located at East Potomac Park.
- Virtual 5K: A remote participation option for the 5K distance.
- Health and Wellness Expo: A dedicated session focused on health and community wellness.
The physical race takes place at East Potomac Park (Hains Point). Registration for the in-person 5K includes a commemorative T-shirt and access to the Health and Wellness Expo. Those participating in the virtual event receive a finisher's medal as part of their registration fee.
The Health and Wellness Expo is held the day before the main race and serves as the primary location for packet pick-up. A secondary check-in window is available on the morning of the race itself, though late arrivals are not permitted on the course once the event has begun. The organizing foundation, PIEF, is a non-profit organization comprised of professional women and community volunteers dedicated to service programs and scholarship funding.
