About the race
The New Years Day Triathlon in Edinburgh is an annual triathlon organised by Edinburgh Triathletes. The 2027 event is the 31st edition and was introduced as part of the Edinburgh Hogmanay Festival. Organisers present it as a safe and inclusive event that has become a regular fixture in the local sporting calendar.
The standard individual course comprises a pool swim, a road cycle and a run around Arthur's Seat. Distances are:
- 400 m swim (8 lengths of the Commie Pool)
- 11 mile cycle (three laps around Arthur's Seat, clockwise)
- 3.5 mile run (one lap around Arthur's Seat, clockwise)
There is a separate children’s duathlon for 8 to 15 year olds that uses closed roads and follows a short run, a 2 km bike, then a short run. Entries for the kids duathlon are taken on the day. For the cycle sections helmets are compulsory and bikes must be road worthy.
Every entrant receives a race memento. Because the event takes place in winter, organisers note that bad weather is possible; the race has run in various conditions and has only once required course adaptation. If cancellation is necessary due to weather, a partial refund may be issued after unrecoverable costs are considered. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
