MTC Redcap Ultra Marathon
The MTC Redcap is a single-day ultra marathon covering a total distance of 55.1 miles. The event begins at the Gretna Chase Hotel, located on the border between England and Scotland, and concludes at the Traquair Arms Hotel in Innerleithen. This race serves as the first day of the nine-day SCOTIA multi-day challenge, meaning participants run alongside competitors tackling the longer end-to-end journey across Scotland.
The course features approximately 3,018 feet of climbing and 3,484 feet of descent. To ensure safety and logistical flow, the event enforces a minimum average pace requirement of 4 miles per hour. There are four established checkpoints along the route:
- 10.6 miles - Lockerbie
- 21.4 miles - Langholm
- 32.4 miles - B709 Selkirk
- 43.1 miles - B709 Selkirk
Each checkpoint has specific closing times based on the required pace. This is a cup-free event, so participants are expected to bring their own reusable drinking vessels. Checkpoints provide various food items such as malt loaf, sandwiches, sweets, and various drinks.
Participants must carry mandatory equipment, including a backpack, head torch with spare batteries, a compass or GPS device, a whistle, a mobile phone, and a basic first aid kit. The organizer provides a tracking device to each runner for real-time progress monitoring and emergency assistance. All finishers receive a bespoke race medal, while male and female champions are awarded a race trophy. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
