Event Overview
The MTC LEJOG is a multi-day ultra-running event that traverses the classic route from Land's End to John O'Groats. Covering approximately 852.3 miles (854 miles total according to route data), the course is almost entirely on-road. The event is scheduled over 17 consecutive days, requiring participants to maintain a minimum average speed of 4 mph. Participation is strictly limited to 12 entries to ensure manageable support and logistics.
Course Details
The route begins at Land's End in Cornwall and heads north through various regions including Somerset, Bristol, the West Midlands, Lancashire, and Cumbria before crossing into Scotland. Notable milestones include reaching Gretna Green and passing through the Scottish Highlands via Aviemore and Pitlochry. Daily distances vary significantly:
- Day 1 to Day 14: Daily distances ranging from 45.7 miles to 57.8 miles.
- Day 15: 45.7 miles.
- Day 16: 36.3 miles.
- Day 17: 16.8 miles.
The total ascent for the event is approximately 16,589 metres.
Logistics and Support
The organizers provide accommodation from the end of Day 1 through to the end of Day 16, utilizing a mix of hostels, hotels, and B&Bs on a shared-room basis. Participants are responsible for their own accommodation at the start in Land's End and at the finish in John O'Groats.
This is a cup-free event, meaning runners must carry their own reusable drinking vessels. Checkpoints are typically positioned at 8-mile intervals, offering a variety of food such as malt loaf, sandwiches, and sweets. Evening meals are generally arranged at local restaurants or via provided options at accommodations.
Safety and Equipment
Each competitor is provided with a tracking device that includes an SOS button for emergencies. Mandatory kit includes a backpack, head torch with spare batteries, a compass or GPS device, a whistle, a mobile phone, and a basic first aid kit.
