Mt. Rose Hill Climb
The Mt. Rose Hill Climb is a fundraising out-and-back running event in the Sierra Nevada near Reno, supporting Washoe County Search and Rescue. The route starts and ends at the Mt. Rose Summit Trailhead and covers just under 10 miles with a sustained ascent to high alpine terrain.
Participants follow the Mt. Rose Summit Trail past a waterfall, then continue up switchbacks to meet Relay Peak Road. From there the course follows a dirt road to a ridge trail that leads to the 10,338 ft summit of Relay Peak. The return follows the ridgeline back to Relay Peak Road and uses the dirt road for the majority of the downhill finish. The course will be well marked and volunteers will be stationed at intersections.
There are water-only aid stations roughly at mile 3, again near the summit about four miles later, and at the finish approximately 2.7 miles after that second station. Because of the remote trail location, water refills are not guaranteed. Parking is limited; US Forest Service permit requirements restrict parking to the dirt lots on either side of the large paved lot and participants may need to be dropped off or walk from farther parking. Prizes are awarded to the top three finishers in each category and to the overall fastest summit runners. Timing is by stop watches kept by search and rescue volunteers. The event is sanctioned by USA Track and Field. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
