Moran Constitutional Relay
The Moran Constitutional Relay is a team-based event held at Moran State Park on Orcas Island. The race features a 70-mile course divided into 12 legs. Teams consisting of two to six runners navigate various terrains, including lowland forests, rocky balds, lakeshores, and wetlands. The route reaches the summit of Mount Constitution at an elevation of 2399 feet.
The event is conducted in two stages over a single weekend. The first eight legs take place on Saturday, followed by the final four legs on Sunday. The individual leg distances range from 3.1 miles to 8.6 miles, with varying elevation profiles:
- Leg 1: 5.9 miles
- Leg 2: 3.9 miles
- Leg 3: 4.4 miles
- Leg 4: 5.2 miles
- Leg 5: 7.3 miles
- Leg 6: 3.1 miles
- Leg 7: 8.4 miles
- Leg 8: 5.3 miles
- Leg 9: 7.5 miles
- Leg 10: 4.3 miles
- Leg 11: 8.6 miles
- Leg 12: 7.7 miles
Teams may distribute the legs among members as they choose, provided each participant completes at least two legs. The trails are primarily non-technical and well-groomed, though some sections contain steeper, more technical terrain. Each team is permitted two vehicles for transporting members to exchange zones.
Registration includes an event t-shirt and several meals provided at the Environmental Learning Center. Finisher medals are awarded to teams that complete the full course. On-site lodging in cabins or A-frames is available by reservation. Participation is limited to 50 teams, and each team must provide one volunteer or pay an alternative fee.
