Event Overview
The Montara Mountain Trail Run takes place in San Pedro Valley Park, located in Pacifica, California. The course traverses the Montara Mountain area, which contains undisturbed Coastal Mountain Habitat. Participants run through groves of Huckleberry, Honeysuckle, Lilac, Chinquapin, and Manzanita while gaining views of the Pacific Coast.
The following distances are available:
- 10K (1,200 feet elevation gain; 89% single track)
- Half Marathon (2,900 feet elevation gain; 73% single track)
- 20 mi (4,640 feet elevation gain; 68% single track)
- Marathon (5,840 feet elevation gain; 73% single track)
- 50K (6,700 feet elevation gain; 75% single track)
- Kid's Run (50-yard dash for ages 6 and younger)
Logistics and Regulations
This is a cupless event aimed at reducing waste. Runners must bring their own hydration containers, as pre-filled cups are not provided at aid stations. Fully stocked aid stations are located every 6 to 7 miles and provide water, electrolyte drinks, fruit, and snacks. The organizers recommend carrying at least 20 ounces of water between stations.
The course is marked with color-coded ribbons and polka-dot flagging at intersections. There is an overall time limit of 9 hours for all events, with a specific cut-off for the Half Marathon at the 13.1-mile mark. Finishers receive a custom medal, and 50K finishers receive an additional custom coaster. T-shirts are provided to pre-registered participants. Dogs are not permitted on the course.
