Elevation gain and course surface vary by distance. Examples from the course data: the 10K has about 1,200 feet of gain and is mostly single track; the Half Marathon has about 2,900 feet of gain; the 50K lists about 6,700 feet of gain. Surfaces include single track, dirt road, and small sections of asphalt.
The course is marked with ribbon approximately every 200 yards and color coded by distance. Polka-dot flagging indicates required turns; blue ribbons mark wrong directions. If runners do not see their flagging for several minutes they are likely off course. Headphones are allowed only on dirt road sections and are not permitted on single-track, road crossings, at aid stations, or when crossing the finish line.
Aid stations are fully stocked every 6 to 7 miles with fruit, salty snacks, candy, water, and electrolyte drink; runners are advised to carry at least 20 ounces of water between stations. The event operates cupless; participants are asked to use their own fluid containers. Drop bags are permitted for the 20 mile, Marathon, and 50K distances. Pre-registered runners receive shirts and all finishers receive a custom medal; 50K finishers receive an additional custom coaster. Overall top finishers receive awards and race credits.
