Hunter S. Thompson Fear & Loathing

The Hunter S. Thompson Fear & Loathing event is an urban ultra-running experience held in San Francisco, California. Presented by a collaboration of the Haight Ashbury Ultra Society, Zombie Runners, and Fat Ass Runners, this event is described as a "fat ass" style run. The event operates under the principles of "No Fees, No Awards, No Aid, No Wimps," though unofficial aid is often provided by volunteers from parked vehicles at various intervals.

Participants navigate a single-loop course that starts and ends at Twin Peaks, the highest vista point in the city. The route is designed as an urban adventure that passes through several notable locations, including Japantown, Coit Tower, Marina Green, Lake Merced, and Sunset Blvd. Runners are expected to use turn sheets and maps to navigate the city streets, emphasizing the art of urban exploration.

Available distances include:

  • 50 Miles
  • 50K

For those participating in the 50 Miles distance, a time cutoff is enforced. Runners must reach the 25-mile mark within 4 hours and 45 minutes to continue on the full course; otherwise, they are directed to the 50K route. The 50 Miles distance also requires completing an additional 0.67-mile hourglass loop around Twin Peaks at the end of the run to ensure the full distance is covered. Completion of the event serves as a qualifier for the Ohlone Wilderness 50K Trail Run.

The event supports the Shoes For Runners cause, which collects and donates running gear to villages in Mexico and other locations worldwide. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
