Event overview

The Montane Winter Spine is a non-stop winter ultra running event of 268 miles along the Pennine Way. The race starts in Edale, Derbyshire and finishes in Kirk Yetholm in the Scottish Borders. Entrants have a maximum time limit of 168 hours to complete the route. The course includes about 10,732 metres of ascent and 10,941 metres of descent. Typical January conditions are given as daytime temperatures between 0°C and 10°C and night-time temperatures between -10°C and 2°C, with around 8 hours of daylight. The event is limited to 150 places. The published entry cost is £1,345.

Route, checkpoints and entry requirements

The route crosses the Peak District, Yorkshire Dales, Northumberland National Park, Hadrian’s Wall and the Cheviots. Main checkpoints include Birchcliffe, Hawes, Hardraw, Langdon Beck, Alston and Bellingham. At checkpoints runners are offered hot meals, hot and cold drinks, sleeping space, resupply bag service, weather updates, race information, and a professional medical crew; toilets and showers are available at Hawes, Alston and Bellingham. The race is described as unsupported, though participants may use cafes and pubs along the route; organised pacing or private support vehicles are not permitted. To enter, runners must be at least 21 years old and demonstrate relevant experience, such as a mountain, hill or moorland ultra over 100 miles or completion of a Montane Spine Challenger event.
