Overview
The Montane Winter Spine is a non-stop trail race of 268 miles along the Pennine Way, starting in Edale, Derbyshire and finishing in Kirk Yetholm, Scottish Borders. Competitors must complete the route within a time limit of 168 hours. The course crosses the Peak District, Yorkshire Dales, Northumberland National Park, Hadrian’s Wall and the Cheviots, with a reported total ascent of 10,732 metres and total descent of 10,941 metres. January daylight hours are about eight per day, and typical reported temperatures range from 0°C to 10°C by day and -10°C to 2°C by night.
Race format and entry
Entry is limited to 150 places and the published entry fee is £1,345. Payment can be made in full or by deposit with the remaining balance due 100 days before the race; online card payments are accepted. Entrants must be aged 21 or over and meet experience requirements, such as having completed a mountain, hill or moorland ultra over 100 miles, a Montane Spine Challenger event, or equivalent mountain navigation and endurance challenges.
The event is run as unsupported along the route, though cafes and pubs may be used for sustenance and shelter. Main checkpoints on the route include Birchcliffe, Hawes, Hardraw, Langdon Beck, Alston and Bellingham, where runners are offered hot meals and drinks, sleeping space, resupply bags, medical cover and weather updates; toilets and showers are available at some checkpoints.
