Event Overview
The Montane Winter Spine is a non-stop endurance race covering 268 miles along the Pennine Way national trail. The race starts in Edale, Derbyshire, and finishes in Kirk Yetholm in the Scottish Borders. Participants have a time limit of 156 hours to complete the route.
Route and Terrain
The route follows the Pennine Way, crossing terrain in the Peak District, Yorkshire Dales, Northumberland National Park, Hadrian's Wall, and the Cheviots. The total ascent is 10,732 metres and the total descent is 10,941 metres. The event takes place in winter, with conditions that can include snow, wind, and rain.
Event Details
The entry fee is £1,345 per athlete. There are 150 places available. Participants must be aged 21 or over at the time of the race. Entry requires prior experience in similar challenges, such as mountain, hill, or moorland ultras over 100 miles, completion of a Montane Spine Challenger event, mountain marathons, fell races, or expeditions.
Checkpoints and Support
There are five main checkpoints: Birchcliffe, Hawes, Hardraw, Langdon Beck, Alston, and Bellingham. These offer hot meals, hot and cold drinks, a place to sleep, toilets, showers (at some locations), medical support, and a resupply bag. The race is unsupported, meaning no private pacing or planned support is allowed, but runners can use cafes and pubs along the route. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
