Expedition-Style Racing on the Pennine Way
The Montane Summer Spine consists of six non-stop, expedition-style races along the Pennine Way, an iconic national trail in Britain. The flagship event covers 268 miles from Edale in Derbyshire to Kirk Yetholm in the Scottish Borders. Participants experience approximately 19 hours of daylight in June, with temperatures fluctuating between 25°C during the day and 0°C at night. The full course involves 10,732 metres of total ascent and 10,941 metres of descent.
Available Race Categories
The event includes multiple distances and categories:
- Spine: A full 268 mile non-stop race with a 156-hour time limit.
- Challenger North and Challenger South: Intermediate distance options.
- Sprint North and Sprint South: Shorter distance variations.
- MRT Challenge North and MRT Challenge South: Specific categories for Mountain Rescue Team members.
Support and Requirements
Participants race unsupported but may use cafes and pubs along the route. Pacing or planned private support is prohibited. However, the organizers provide five main checkpoints at Hebden Hey, Hardraw, Middleton-in-Teesdale, Alston, and Bellingham. These stations offer hot meals, sleeping areas, showers (at specific locations), and professional medical crews. A logistics team also transports runner resupply bags between these checkpoints.
Entry requires verified experience. Applicants for the full 268 mile race must be 21 or older and have completed an ultra-marathon over 80 miles or a previous Challenger event. Other relevant experience includes mountain marathons, fell races, or military background. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
