Montane Summer Spine : Spine
The Montane Summer Spine Spine is a non stop, expedition style race that follows the full Pennine Way from Edale in Derbyshire to Kirk Yetholm in the Scottish Borders. The route covers 268 miles with a total ascent of 10,732 metres and a total descent of 10,941 metres. Runners must complete the course within a 156 hour time limit.
The event is organised around five main checkpoints at Hebden Hey, Hardraw, Middleton-in-Teesdale, Alston and Bellingham. At these checkpoints participants are offered hot meals, hot and cold drinks, sleeping areas, toilets, showers at selected locations, professional medical crews, weather updates and race information. The logistics team moves runners’ resupply bags between checkpoints.
The race is held in June when daylight hours are around 19 hours and typical daytime temperatures range from 5°C to 25°C while night temperatures can be between 0°C and 10°C. The field is limited to 150 places.
The event is classed as unsupported on the route; cafes and pubs may be used for food and shelter but planned pacing, private support vehicles and organised pacing are not permitted. Entry requires payment; the published fee is £995 with a deposit option of £398 and a remaining balance of £597 due 100 days before the race. Entrants must be at least 21 years old and normally need prior long distance or mountain experience to qualify. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
