MikeyStrong Fun Run / Walk
The MikeyStrong Fun Run / Walk is a memorial event held at James H. Nance Park in Indialantic, Florida. The event takes place at the Mikey Goodwin Playground and features courses located on the beach. This annual gathering serves to honor individuals affected by Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG), a form of pediatric brain cancer found in the brainstem.
The event offers several participation options to accommodate different ages and preferences:
- 2 Miles fun run or walk held in person.
- 5K virtual run or walk for remote participants.
- Turkey Dash specifically for children aged 12 and under.
The initiative aims to provide information about DIPG and support families facing childhood cancer. Scientific information shared during the event explains that DIPG affects the pons, an area of the brainstem responsible for essential bodily functions such as breathing and balance.
Participants contribute to a cause where proceeds are donated to research and family support. Funds are directed to the Mikey Goodwin Research Fund at UF Shands, which assists with travel for treatment and research, as well as organizations like Candlelighters of Brevard, Inc. The foundation is operated by volunteers, ensuring that a high percentage of funds raised goes directly toward finding a cure and assisting families in Brevard and Indian River counties.
