The event in Montauk is a long running triathlon first held in 1982 and marking its 45th anniversary. It is used as a fundraiser supporting pancreatic cancer research and benefits several local organizations. Transition is at the corner of West Lake Drive and Star Island Road in Montauk.
Distances for the race variations:
- Olympic race: 1 mile swim, 20 miles bike, 6.2 miles run
- Aquabike: 1 mile swim, 20 miles bike
- Sprint triathlon: 0.5 mile swim, 14 miles bike, 3.88 miles run
Course details: the swim is an out and back in the calm salt water of Lake Montauk; wetsuits are recommended in spring when water temperatures are commonly near 55 degrees Fahrenheit. The bike courses run along historical Montauk routes, are out and back with some hills, require hardshell helmets (ANSE approved) and bar end plugs, and follow a no drafting policy. There are no water stops on the bike. Run courses traverse the scenic side of Montauk with challenging hills and water stops at roughly one mile intervals. Electronic music devices are not allowed except smartphones.
The event is USA Triathlon sanctioned; participants must present membership cards or purchase a one day license. The course time limit is 3 hours 55 minutes. Packet pickup is on June 12, 2026 at the Harborside Motel in Montauk and requires photo ID. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
