Mearley Clough Fell Race
Mearley Clough Fell Race is a short fell race near Clitheroe, based at The Calf’s Head in Worston. The course covers 3.5 miles with approximately 1247 ft of ascent and is partially marked. The finish is in the field next to Worston House.
Registration takes place in the pub or its gardens, subject to the weather. Entry on the day is priced at £8 for FRA members and £10 for non-members. There is a cut off of one hour at the Scout cairn. The event is held under UKA rules and is registered with the FRA.
The route starts outside The Calf’s Head and follows a short road then fields to a farm track. Runners follow the track up past a farmyard, continue through rising woodland, cross a brook, and climb to a fell gate. A steep rocky section known as the Big Dipper leads to the Scout cairn. The top of the clough is crossed and a well flagged steep descent returns runners to the finish by the same route.
The race is open to anyone aged 14 or over. Under 18s need parental consent on the correct form or must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who will sign at registration. Race entry includes a pasta supper at The Calf’s Head. Prize vouchers are awarded to top finishers and across multiple age categories; there are no team prizes.
