Mearley Clough Fell Race
The Mearley Clough fell race is an annually held short fell event near Clitheroe. The first running was in 1998 with 34 participants; current attendance averages about 130. In 2011, when the race formed part of an English championship, the men and women ran separate races and the route was altered for that year.
The course covers 5.6 km / 3.5 miles with approximately 380 m climb. The route is partially marked and runs through fields, a farmyard at Little Mearley Farm, then up a steadily rising track through woods to a stile into a rough field. Flags lead across a brook and up a steeper field to a fell gate, then over a section called the Big Dipper and a steep climb to the Scout cairn. After traversing the clough top runners descend steeply to the fell gate and return by the same route to finish in a field next to Worston House. A one hour cut off is enforced at the Scout Cairn.
The event is held under UKA rules and registered with the FRA. Participants must carry the FRA Mandatory Minimum Kit; a recommendation is provided on the day. Registration takes place in the pub.
