Marsh Madness - Pointe Mouillee State Game Area
Marsh Madness is a 32 hour ultramarathon held at Pointe Mouillee State Game Area near South Rockwood, Michigan. The course runs on dikes and marsh roads within a 4,040 acre freshwater marsh where the Huron River, the Detroit River, and Lake Erie meet. The route offers views across the water toward Ontario and Ohio and the opportunity to see local wildlife such as eagles.
The event uses alternating loops: an 8 mile loop and a 4.6 mile out-and-back during daytime, and a 4 mile loop at night when the dike is not available between 11 pm and 6 am. There are no cut-off times listed and the overall time allowance is 32 hours.
Logistics are self supported. Entry is free and the field is limited to 50 runners. Participants must supply their own aid and nutrition; crew, pacers, and poles are permitted. Vehicles are accessible about every 8 miles. Porta-potties are placed on the 4.6 mile out-and-back. There are no garbage cans on site; participants are asked to pack out their trash.
Course characteristics include roughly 69 feet of elevation gain per loop, approximately 80% gravel and 20% asphalt surfaces, and zero water crossings. A sign-in meeting is scheduled at the start 30 minutes before the race. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
