Event overview
The Mám Éan race takes place in County Galway on Saturday 16 May 2026. The event is run under an IMRA permit with entries capped at 50. The route is fully marked and GPS use is not allowed. The event difficulty is rated 7 (Difficult Terrain, 200 m - 500 m ascent, 6 km - 10 km). Prizegiving, a raffle, and light refreshments will be available at the finish area.
Course and distances
- 8.30 km - main course, approximately 350 m climb
- 3.70 km - short/junior course, approximately 170 m climb
The course is primarily out-and-back with some variation in the middle. The start follows a main rocky path, then turns onto a smaller path up towards a chapel. The turnaround for the main course is near Gate 5 at about 4.2 km. Runners retrace the route with a final descent to the finish. The route includes loose, rocky and technical terrain and offers views of the surrounding mountains.
Logistics and safety
Parking is at Loigín (Car Park), Derryvealawauma, Co. Galway; space is limited and car pooling is encouraged. Entries are pre-registered only; there are no cash entries on the day. Runners must carry Level B mandatory kit: waterproof jacket, hat or buff, gloves, whistle, charged mobile phone with emergency number, and a foil blanket or bivvy bag. Random kit checks may be carried out and lack of required items can lead to denied entry or disqualification. Under-10s must be accompanied on the route; minimum age is 6.
