Western Way 30k – Maam to Leenane
This is a mountain running event along the Western Way between Maam and Leenane in County Galway on Saturday 14 November 2026. The course distance is 30 km with approximately 710 m of climb. The event difficulty is rated 9 (3,3,3), reflecting difficult terrain, more than 500 m ascent and a course longer than 10 km. Only major junctions on the route are marked. GPS devices are allowed.
Mandatory kit is Level C - Advanced. Required items include a waterproof jacket with integrated hood and taped seams, hat or buff, gloves, whistle, charged mobile phone with an emergency number stored, foil blanket or bivvy bag, waterproof full leg cover, means to carry at least 500 mL of water, emergency food, a map of the route or area, and a compass. All runners must bring these items to the event. The actual kit to be carried during the race will be finalised on the day and advised at registration. Runners should also have a way to carry all required kit. Failure to carry required items may result in denial of entry or disqualification and random kit checks may be carried out.
Runners meet in Leenane to be transported to the start. The finish is in Leenane at Leenaun Parking. Prizegiving for the race and for the Galway 2026 league will take place at Leenane Hotel after the race. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
