About the race
Western Way 30k – Maam to Leenane is an off-road mountain run in County Galway that follows the Western Way route between Mám and Líonán. The advertised race distance is 32.5 km with total ascent of 1,090 m. The course includes an out and back section that goes up to Binn Chuiní and is marked only at major junctions. GPS use is allowed and the event is graded as difficult terrain with significant climbing.
The event starts and finishes at Mám Community Centre; runners are transported by bus from Líonán to the start. The organisers note the bus will not wait. There is parking at the meeting point and additional parking nearby. Registration takes place at Mám Community Centre.
A mandatory Level C kit list is required for all competitors and may be checked. Required items include a waterproof jacket with hood and taped seams, hat or buff, gloves, whistle, charged mobile phone with an emergency number stored, foil blanket or bivvy, waterproof full leg cover, means to carry at least 500 mL of water, emergency food, map and compass. The final kit to be carried may be confirmed at registration depending on conditions; failure to carry required kit can lead to denial of entry or disqualification.
