MTC Gancanagh

MTC Gancanagh is a single-day ultra running event covering 52.4 miles and the ninth day of the MTC MizMal series. The route starts at the Woodfield Hotel, Clifden, County Galway and finishes at Westport Woods Hotel & Spa. Most of the route follows the MizMal route provided by Wild Atlantic Cycling.

The course records a total ascent of 2,942 ft and descent of 2,940 ft. Competitor numbers are limited to 20 entries plus up to 20 MizMal competitors, giving a maximum field of 40. The event uses preset cut-off points based on a minimum average speed of 4 mph; competitors who fall below this minimum may be withdrawn. Check points are at pre-determined locations and examples of available food include malt loaf, sandwiches, sweets, squash, cola and water. The race is cup free so runners should bring a reusable cup.

All finishers receive a bespoke Gancanagh medal and male and female champions receive trophies. Entrants must be at least 20 years old. Maps and GPX files are provided to entrants only, sent approximately four weeks before the event. Organisers provide individual tracking devices with an SOS function for real-time monitoring. Competitors must carry mandatory equipment such as a backpack, head torch with spare batteries, route maps, compass or GPS, whistle, mobile phone and a basic first aid kit. Entry fees are non refundable and there is an optional upgrade that includes an official race shirt and hi viz jacket when selected in advance. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
