Event Details

The MTC Gancanagh is an ultramarathon covering a distance of 52.4 miles. It is a single-day event starting at the Woodfield Hotel in Clifden, County Galway, and concluding at the Westport Woods Hotel & Spa in County Mayo. The route largely follows the MizMal route, which was originally designed for cycling.

Participation and Structure

This event also serves as day 9 of the larger, 14-day MTC MizMal End to End Challenge of Ireland. A maximum of 40 participants are allowed, with 20 slots for the standalone MTC Gancanagh and 20 for those undertaking the full multi-day challenge.

Race Requirements

Participants must maintain a minimum average speed of 4 mph throughout the race. Those falling below this pace will be withdrawn. The event is cup-free, so runners must bring their own reusable cup for checkpoints. A specific mandatory kit list includes items like a backpack, head torch, map, compass, whistle, mobile phone, and basic first aid supplies.

Logistics and Support

The route features four checkpoints with food provisions, including items like malt loaf, sandwiches, sweets, and drinks. Each participant is provided with a tracking device that includes an SOS button for emergencies. Detailed maps and GPX files are emailed to entrants four weeks before the race.

Finisher Recognition

All finishers receive a bespoke Gancanagh medal. Separate trophies are awarded to the male and female champions. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
