Event
The MTC Gancanagh is a new single-day ultra race on 16 May 2026. The course covers a total of 52.4 miles with approximately 2,942 ft of ascent and 2,940 ft of descent. The route starts at the Woodfield Hotel, Clifden, County Galway, and finishes at Westport Woods Hotel & Spa. The MTC Gancanagh is Day 9 of the MTC MizMal® fourteen-day Ireland end-to-end series and forms part of the Mount to Coast End to End Challenge Series. This is the first edition of the event.
Entries, logistics and rules
Competitor numbers are limited to 20 standard entrants plus an additional allowance of 20 MizMal® competitors, for a maximum of 40. Entry fees are listed as £90 for the race and £155 for the MTC Gancanagh Plus Race Package, which includes an embroidered race shirt and a lightweight hi-viz jacket if ordered at least four weeks before the event. All entries and payments are non-refundable under the organiser’s terms.
The race is cup-free; competitors must bring a reusable cup. Mandatory kit includes a backpack, head torch with spare batteries, provided route maps, compass or GPS, whistle, mobile phone, basic first aid and an emergency food pack. Organisers provide tracking devices with SOS functions and release GPX/maps to entrants four weeks before the race. Preset cut-off points require a minimum average speed of 4.0 mph; competitors falling below this threshold may be withdrawn. All finishers receive a Gancanagh medal; male and female champions receive trophies. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
