Overview
The M22 Challenge is a multi-sport event held within the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. The course combines running, cycling, and paddling through the natural landscapes of Northern Michigan. The event includes a 2.5-mile run, a 17-mile bike ride, and a 2.5-mile paddle.
Event Stages
- 2.5-mile Run: The race begins with a shotgun start on M-109. Runners enter the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore and perform a 100-yard climb up a sand dune. After reaching the top, participants run along the dune face and follow a groomed trail back to the transition area.
- 17-mile Bike: The cycling portion follows a route through Glen Arbor and along the Crystal River. The course passes Big Glen Lake and Inspiration Point, continuing through a wooded section back to the transition area. No drafting is permitted, and helmets are mandatory.
- 2.5-mile Paddle: The final leg takes place on Little Glen Lake. Competitors may use a surfski, kayak, or stand-up paddleboard (SUP). All participants must have a personal flotation device (PFD) on their craft. The race concludes with a water dismount and a short sprint to the finish line.
Important Logistics
Staging and equipment drop-off occur on the day before the event. Due to National Park regulations, no parking is permitted along M-109 or at the event site. A shuttle service operates from downtown Glen Arbor to the race location. All participants and spectators are required to possess a National Park Entrance Pass.
To protect the local watershed, all watercraft must be inspected or power-washed to prevent the spread of invasive species. Free power washing is provided by the Glen Lake Association at designated stations. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
