Lyke Wake Walk - W-E (guided/supported)
The Lyke Wake Walk was created in 1955 and was designed to cross the North York Moors at its widest and highest points. The route runs between Scarth Wood Moor, Osmotherley and Ravenscar on the North Sea coast. The original challenge covers roughly 40 miles of moorland; the guided crossing offered here is just under 39 miles and must be completed within a 24-hour limit. Guided groups typically take 15 to 18 hours to complete the route.
The guide team is based in Stokesley, North Yorkshire, near the Cleveland Hills. Guides are appropriately qualified, hold first aid training and are insured. Open group crossings have a maximum of 14 walkers and are usually 10 to 12. For larger groups more than one guide is provided, and private group bookings are available.
Support for participants includes a WhatsApp group for each date with training tips, a full kit list and a training schedule. The organisers offer free guided training walks on the North Yorks Moors, the North Yorkshire coast and the Dales. During the crossing participants are transferred by minibus to the opposite end of the walk and walk back along the route. On crossings the organisers supply water, unlimited sugar-based snacks and blister plasters, and a small surprise gift at the end.
Entries for dates carry a fee of £110 per person with a £50 non-refundable deposit; the remaining balance is due six weeks before the walk. The event is currently full and new entries are placed on a waiting list without immediate payment. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
