Event overview
The Lyke Wake Challenge 2026 is scheduled for Saturday 11 July 2026. The event is a linear, point-to-point crossing of just over 40 miles from near Osmotherley to Ravenscar. Entry will be via SiEntries and opens in the autumn. The Challenge is run on a handicap basis using previous Lyke Wake times or estimated times. Participants must be 21 or over and the maximum allowed time to complete the event is twelve hours, including the handicap. The route is not marked and participants are expected to know the classic Lyke Wake route.
Route, checkpoints and logistics
The start is close to Osmotherley (Sheepwash car park, top of Cod Beck reservoir) and the finish is in the grounds of Raven Hall at Ravenscar. There are seven checkpoints at Carlton Bank, Clay Bank, the Lion Inn, Hamer, Stape, Ellerbeck and Jugger Howe. Checkpoints supply drinks and most provide snacks; the Lion Inn checkpoint offers additional food such as rice pudding or tinned fruit. Toilet facilities are available a few metres from the finish. The course is remote in places, transport to the start or from the finish is not provided, and parking at the start is limited and remote.
Safety, kit and support
Mandatory kit must be carried at all times and includes a suitable paper map (electronic maps are not acceptable), a waterproof jacket, whistle, emergency foil blanket, minimum 300 ml water or isotonic drink, a drink container, emergency food and a fully charged mobile phone with an emergency number stored. A full kit check is carried out at registration and random checks may occur on course; failure to carry mandatory kit will result in disqualification. Raynet volunteers provide radio communications between checkpoints. A cut-off time will be enforced at the Ellerbeck checkpoint.
Awards and charitable support
All finishers receive a commemorative technical t-shirt. Trophies are presented to the first male and female finishers and the fastest overall male and female. From each entry fee a minimum donation of £2 goes to Cleveland Mountain Rescue Team and Scarborough & Ryedale Mountain Rescue Teams. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
