Lyke Wake Walk - W-E (guided/supported)
Created in 1955, the Lyke Wake Walk was designed to cross the North York Moors at its widest and highest points. The guided and supported crossing runs between Scarth Wood Moor near Osmotherley and Ravenscar on the North Sea coast inside the North York Moors National Park. The route covers just under 39 miles of moorland. There is no set line of travel; the traditional challenge is to walk from one marker to the opposite marker within a maximum of 24 hours. Groups typically take 15 to 18 hours to complete the crossing.
Open group crossings are led by two guides and include minibus transfer to the opposite end of the walk so the group returns on the route. Open groups are limited to a maximum of 14 walkers, commonly 10 to 12. The organisers provide a full kit list and a training schedule, plus a WhatsApp group for each date where training tips and group information are shared. Free guided training walks are offered on the North York Moors, the North Yorkshire coast and the Dales. On the crossing the organisers supply water, sugar based snacks, blister plasters and a small end-of-walk gift. If a first attempt is unsuccessful a second crossing is offered free; a further crossing may be possible but transport is not guaranteed.
Entries are handled via SiEntries. Entry fee for listed dates is £140 per person with a £70 non refundable deposit and the balance due eight weeks before the crossing. Entries open and close on the dates listed by the organiser. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
