Lock 2 Lock Marathon
Lock 2 Lock is a running event held on the C&O Canal Towpath in Williamsport, Maryland on Saturday, September 12, 2026. The event offers these distances:
- Marathon
- Half Marathon
- 10K
All races stage near Lock 44 on the towpath. The marathon uses an out-and-back loop to about Lock 43 (6.56 miles one way) completed twice. The half marathon uses the same out-and-back loop once. The 10K runs 3.1 miles out on the towpath toward Washington, D.C., then returns to Lock 44. Course elevation is low across distances: the marathon rises no more than 40 feet, the half no more than 20 feet, and the 10K no more than 10 feet. Aid stations are placed at regular intervals along each course, including the finish area.
The towpath surface varies but is generally a dirt road with occasional potholes, roots, rocks, mud, and puddles; some sections may be wetter after rain. Staging is about 0.2 miles north of Lock 44 (mile 99.5). Parking for participants is provided at Cushwa Basin or Williamsport Park; parking at Lock 44 is limited. Portable toilets are located in the Lock 44 parking lot and at a point near mile 4.
Packet pickup is organized at nearby locations in the days before race day, with additional morning pickup near Lock 44. All finishers receive a T-shirt and a medal. Awards are given to Top Male, Top Female, and Top Masters (40-plus) in each distance. Pacers must be registered for the distance they pace. A portion of proceeds supports the Meritus Foundation Perinatal Bereavement Fund. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
