Legend of the Peaks
Legend of the Peaks is a running and walking festival held in the Whakarewarewa Forest in Rotorua, Aotearoa New Zealand. The programme offers multiple off-road and trail race distances together with expo activities, live music and food vendors. The event base is at Event HQ, Waipa MTB Carpark, Rotorua, Waipa State Mill Rd.
The event includes longer trail races with significant elevation. The Whaka Ultra 50K covers 50.2 km with approximately 2240 m of elevation gain and adds technical climbing and extensive single track. The New Zealand Forest Marathon is about 42.9 km, circumnavigating four peaks - Kohaturoa (Pohaturoa), Titokorangi, Moerangi and Kakapiko - with about 1750 m of elevation gain.
Race distances:
- Whaka Ultra 50K: 50.2 km, approximately 2240 m elevation gain
- New Zealand Forest Marathon: 42.9 km, approximately 1750 m elevation gain
- Camelbak Moerangi Half Marathon: 21.3 km, approximately 950 m elevation gain
- Titokorangi 10K: 10.5 km, approximately 430 m elevation gain
- Secret Spot Hot Tubs 5K Trig Loop: about 5.8–6.1 km, 145 m elevation gain
- Pak'nSAVE Kids Forest Run: 2 km or 3 km for Years 0–8
- Koeke Classic: non-timed 2 km or 3 km options
The Pak'nSAVE Kids Forest Run is free with limited entries and initial access for schools. The Koeke Classic offers accessible 2 km and a 3 km loop with some steps and provides a finishers medal. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
