Leeds & Liverpool Canal 130 Mile Race
The Leeds & Liverpool Canal 130 Mile Race, also known as the Trans-Pennine Run, is a non-stop point-to-point event following the historic towpath of the Leeds & Liverpool Canal. The course begins at Old Hall Street in Liverpool and travels across the Pennines to finish at Office Lock in Leeds. The route covers a total distance of 130 miles through the industrial and rural landscapes of Northern England.
The journey features several notable landmarks, including the Burnley Embankment, which stands 60 feet above the ground, and the Bingley Five Rise staircase locks. Navigation is primarily assisted by following the canal towpath and using detailed maps provided for the event.
Participants must be aged 20 or older to enter. The race is conducted under UK Athletics rules and is limited to 100 runners. The event offers two categories for participants:
- 130 miles (Supported): Runners provide their own support crew.
- 130 miles (Unsupported): Organisers provide support at designated points.
The race has a total time limit of 40 hours. Feed points offering snacks and drinks are positioned approximately every 10 to 15 miles along the course. While there is no medical backup on the course, transport to the nearest railway station is provided for unsupported runners who retire from the race. Buddy runners are permitted to join participants from the 70-mile mark onwards. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
