Event Overview
The Laurel Memorial Run/Walk is a multi-day event held in Western New York to support individuals with developmental disabilities. The event commemorates the legacy of Laurel Hotelling and raises funds for employment opportunities, advocacy, and dental services for people with disabilities through The Resource Center and Filling the Gap, Inc.
Friday Events
The first day features the Laurel Memorial Relay Run, a 31-mile journey from Jamestown to Dunkirk. Participants, including school groups and volunteers, run different legs of the relay, typically covering distances of approximately 3 miles per leg. Individuals also have the option to participate in the Laurel-thon by covering the entire 31-mile route alone. A celebratory event follows the conclusion of the relay in Dunkirk.
Saturday Events
The second day of the event takes place in Silver Creek, NY, with various distances and activities held in the village square:
- 8K Run
- 5K Run
- 13K Challenge (Combined 5K and 8K runs)
- 5K Disability Awareness Walk
- 1K Awareness Fun Walk
- Children's Fun Runs (Ages 7 and younger)
- Laurel's Legacy Lap (For individuals with disabilities)
Participant Information
Registered participants receive a T-shirt and a commemorative medal made by individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Cash prizes are awarded to the top three overall male and female finishers in the 8K Run. In both the 5K and 8K events, medals are provided to the top three male and female finishers across various age groups. Team awards are also available based on combined times. For those unable to attend in person, virtual options allow for participation through activities such as running, cycling, or swimming.
