Event overview

Last Buckeye Standing is a backyard ultra held in Lewis Center, Ohio, at Alum Creek State Park. The format uses a repeated loop of 4.167 miles. Each loop must be completed within one hour and a new loop begins each hour. Runners who fail to complete a loop within the hour or who fail to return to the start line on the hour are eliminated. The winner is the last person to complete a loop; all other finishers are recorded as DNF. If no runner can complete one more loop than anyone else, there is no winner.

Course and logistics

The course is a wooded loop on the Alum Creek Hiking Trail along the Alum Creek Reservoir, using grass ski paths and single-track trails. Elevation changes are moderate, about 100-200 ft per loop. Trails in August are generally dry and runnable, with potential rain and mud in low-lying spots. Water and a limited supply of prepackaged food are available at the start/finish; runners are otherwise responsible for their own aid and nutrition. Parking is at the Galena Boat Ramp Parking Area off Africa Road, with a restroom in the lot and portable toilets on course and at the start/finish. Volunteers receive a race t-shirt and a 25% discount code for another trail race.

Key rules

Runners must be at the start at the bell and start each loop on time. No late starts, no crewing or outside aid during a loop, no non-competitors on course, and no artificial aids such as trekking poles. Slower runners must allow passes.
