Event Overview
The LandShark Swim & Swim+Run takes place at Lake Gardner in Amesbury, Massachusetts. Located approximately 45 minutes north of Boston, this annual event enters its 12th year, attracting roughly 200 participants. The competition features open water swimming in calm, protected waters and a trail running component for multi-sport athletes.
Distances and Course
The event offers several categories for different experience levels:
- 1/2 Mile Swim: A short-distance open water swim.
- 1.2 Mile Swim: An out-and-back course covering 0.6 miles to a turnaround buoy.
- 2.4 Mile Swim: Two laps of the out-and-back course with a 2-hour cutoff time.
- Swim + Run: A 1/2 mile swim followed by a 2 mile trail run.
The run portion utilizes the Lake Gardner Trail System, which includes sections with tree roots. Footwear is required for the run. Transition for the aquathlon is located at Lake Gardner Beach. Every swim distance is chip-timed by a professional timing service.
Participation and Safety
The event is open to participants aged 12 and older, though the 2.4 mile swim requires a minimum age of 15. For safety, the course is monitored by kayakers, paddleboarders, and emergency boats. Snorkels, fins, and hand paddles are prohibited, but the use of swim buoys is permitted. Results are categorized by both wetsuit and non-wetsuit divisions.
