Lake Chaparral Triathlon
The Lake Chaparral Triathlon is a long-standing multisport event held in Calgary. The competition features a variety of races including traditional triathlons, duathlons, and open water swimming. The swim portions take place in Lake Chaparral, followed by cycling on city roadways and running through the local community and park areas.
The event offers several race categories and distances:
- Standard: 1500m swim, 38km bike, 10km run
- Sprint: 750m swim, 19km bike, 5km run
- Tri it: 300m swim, 9km bike, 2.5km run
- Duathlon: 10km run, 38km bike, 5km run
- AquaBike: Choice of 750m swim / 22.8km bike or 1.5km swim / 38km bike
- Open Water Swim: 750m, 1.5km, or 3km options
- Relay Teams: 2 or 3 members for Standard and Sprint distances
- Kids of Steel: Age-specific distances for younger participants
The swim course is a triangular lap in the lake, where swim caps are mandatory. The bike course uses a multi-lap format on roads open to vehicle traffic, monitored by volunteers and the Calgary Police Service. The run course utilizes sidewalks and park paths. For competitive athletes, the Standard Duathlon serves as a qualifier for the 2027 World Multisport Championships, with two qualifying spots available per age category.
All participants must hold a valid Triathlon Alberta membership. Safety regulations require the use of certified helmets and prohibit drafting during the cycling leg. Aid stations are provided along the run course, and all finishers receive a medal upon completion of their event. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
