Knickerbocker Canyon
Knickerbocker Canyon takes place March 28, 2026 at American River Overlook Park in Auburn, California. The event offers multiple trail distances and uses sections of the historic Western States trail, including the No Hands Bridge section and notable climbs known locally as K2 and Dam Hill.
Distances offered:
- 5K (3.5 miles, 650' elevation gain)
- 10K (6.1 miles, 1,150' elevation gain)
- Half Marathon (13.3 miles, 3,000' elevation gain)
- 35K (20.8 miles, 4,800' elevation gain)
Courses run mostly on moderately technical dirt trails and fire roads; hiking or trekking poles are permitted. Longer routes pass toward Cool, CA and include extended switchbacks on descent and ascent. Courses are marked with colored surveyor ribbon about every 200 meters, laminated signs and flour arrows at complicated sections; blue ribbons indicate wrong way.
Aid stations are stocked with a variety of energy foods and drinks such as gels, chews, stroop waffles, salty snacks, PB&J, Coke, water and Skratch Labs hydration. The event is cupless, so runners must carry their own bottle or reusable cup; reusable silicone cups will be available for purchase for $5. Drop bag service is not available.
The event is chip timed with disposable chips attached to bibs and has a total capacity of 400 runners. There is a 6.5 hour time limit for the Half Marathon and 35K. Parking is free within the park and on adjacent streets. Check-in is available the day before at Fleet Feet Roseville and on race morning at Overlook Park.
Awards include overall trophies by gun time, age group awards by chip time, finisher medals, and a special award for the last finisher. Race shirts are technical tri-blend tees; guaranteed sizing requires earlier registration. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
