King of the Mountain - Oak Mountain State Park
King of the Mountain is a trail 5K held on August 15, 2026, at Oak Mountain State Park in Pelham, Alabama. The course starts at the North Trailhead and is listed as a 5K race. Registration opens January 29, 2026 and closes June 15, 2026; the registration fee is $20.00.
The route begins on a short service road before entering the singletrack of Blue Trail. After rolling uphill, the course turns onto a steep climb known as Outback Highway. Runners then continue across rugged terrain for roughly 2.5 miles, encounter a shorter hill and a top-out area with boulders, followed by a downhill section over pine straw. A walk-worthy climb leads to the halfway point and a water station at a feature called King's Chair. A later climb to Eagles Nest is the final major ascent, after which the route descends on technical trail back toward Red Road for the finishing stretch.
The organizer notes approximately 1,100 feet of climbing and descending over the 3.1-mile course. The terrain includes singletrack, rocky top-outs, technical downhills, and sections with pine straw; participants should expect uneven footing and take care on technical sections.
