Kenya Connect 5K: Running/Walking for Education
The Kenya Connect 5K is a live and virtual fundraiser held March 28–29, 2026 to support Kenya Connect's work providing educational options for children in rural Kenya. The live course starts at St. John's Episcopal Church in Ellicott City and runs through the Dunloggin Neighborhood. Participants may run or walk and strollers are welcome. Pets may join the live event on leash and will receive a special bandana; owners are asked to keep pets away from other runners and walkers.
Awards are given to the top three male and female finishers in each age category: 5-12, 13-18, 19-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70-79, and 80+. Age-group winners receive hand-carved medallions from Wamunyu, Kenya; the top overall male and female receive a medallion and runner gift cards ($100 for first place and $50 for second and third). Virtual participants may complete the 5K during the event weekend and are eligible for overall and age-group awards.
Teams can join the Team Captain Challenge by recruiting teammates and meeting fundraising goals; rewards include recognition and program support such as beekeeping items dedicated to the largest team. Runners choose one premium from a tech shirt, visor, or bandana when registered by March 1. Registration prices change in March and youth and pet entry fees apply. Packet pick-up is available the day before at Feet First Columbia or on race day at St. John's. A Kenyan crafts market and light post-race refreshments will be available; beer is offered for those over 21. The event proceeds support Kenya Connect programs.
