Imperial Challenge

The Imperial Challenge is an annual springtime race presented by Race Breck and the Town of Breckenridge Recreation Department. The event moves from town to peak and combines a road or trail approach, a mountaintop ascent, and a downhill finish near the Grand Lodge Peak 7 pool area.

The course begins at the Breckenridge Recreation Center and follows County Road 3 to the base of the Breckenridge Ski Resort. After a transition, competitors climb to the top of Peak 8 at 12,987 feet and then descend back toward the resort. The ascent and descent follow named mountain routes, including Monte Cristo Trail, Angel's Rest, and Pioneer Crossing. Cyclists must wear helmets for the bike portion.

Distances:

  • 6.0 miles first portion, mostly dirt road
  • 9.2 miles total route with 2,246 ft elevation gain

The event offers multiple competition categories: Runners, SkiMo, Retro Open, Heavy Metal/Rec Open, Splitboard/Snowboard, Team Relay, and Team Duo. Runners complete the same course and cover the section that others may ride. Retro Open competitors carry all uphill and downhill gear on their bikes and may ascend and descend on equipment of their choice. Team Relay and Team Duo provide options to split course responsibilities between teammates.

Logistics notes: the transition area is in the parking lot beneath the Peak 7 Gondola at Crystal Peak Lodge; gear drop space is limited and bike racks are first-come, first-served. Organizers do not provide bike security; participants should secure their bikes. Registration is available online and on race day, and entry fees vary by category. The event includes an awards ceremony and published race results. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
