Imperial Challenge

The Imperial Challenge is a springtime race from the Breckenridge Recreation Center to the ski area that includes mixed running, cycling, and alpine ascent and descent. The event commemorates springtime in Breckenridge and combines a road or dirt-road section with a mountain climb to Peak 8 at 12,987 feet.

The course is staged in three main parts: a road or trail approach from the recreation center to the base of Peak 7, a transition and uphill ascent to the summit of Peak 8, and a final downhill return toward the ski-area base. Key course details include:

  • 6.0 miles for the initial road/trail section to the resort base
  • 9.2 miles approximate total distance with about 2,246 ft elevation gain

Categories cover a range of equipment and competitors, including Runners, SkiMo, Retro Open, Heavy Metal/Rec Open, Splitboard/Snowboard, Team Relay, and Team Duo. Cyclists must wear helmets during the bike portion. The transition area and gear drop-off are located beneath the Peak 7 Gondola at Crystal Peak Lodge; participants are responsible for securing their own bikes as no bike security is provided.

Results and historical race records are published for past years. Awards are given to top overall finishers in the listed categories. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
