Event Overview
The Honor Abe 5K is an annual Abraham Balawi Memorial 5K run/walk event. It began in 2018.
Purpose and Background
The event was created to support the Abraham Balawi Memorial Scholarship Fund. This fund awards annual scholarships to at least two deserving Pickens County high school seniors. The scholarships continue the legacy of Abraham "Abe" Balawi, a 2015 Liberty High School graduate and gifted athlete who won the AA State 1600m race in 2014 and ran at Mercer University. He was tragically killed in a car accident in 2017.
Event Impact
Funds raised go directly to the scholarship fund, which has awarded scholarships to local students since 2017. The event also helps fund awards, medals, and t-shirts for local runners, and supports the Pickens County Cross Country and Track & Field Meet. The Pickens County Track & Field Meet hosts the Abraham Balawi Mile Run, renamed in his honor.
