Historic White Mills 5K
The Historic White Mills 5K is a running event set in the small town of White Mills, located in western Hardin County, Kentucky. This race is a central part of the annual White Mills Days festival, a community celebration that includes a parade, car show, vendor booths, and a tractor show. The event serves as a fundraiser for the White Mills Civic League, with proceeds supporting local community safety, the volunteer fire department, and public park maintenance.
The course features a 5 km distance on a relatively flat and mostly shaded route. Participants begin the race near the White Mills Post Office and cross an historic truss bridge constructed in 1899. The path takes runners over the Nolin River and continues alongside the water for the majority of the run. The scenic country road route passes by local corn and soybean fields and livestock farms before reaching a marked turnaround point.
Awards are presented to the top three male and female overall finishers, including cash prizes. Additionally, medals are awarded to the top two male and female finishers in various age categories ranging from 18 and under to 70 and over. A specific award is also designated for the first male and female residents of Hardin County to cross the finish line.
Participants who register by late July are guaranteed a race t-shirt. On the day of the event, the community atmosphere continues with a raffle drawing during the awards presentation and a traditional chicken dinner served in the historic hotel dining room following the conclusion of the festival activities.
