What is the High Five 100?
The High Five 100 is a 100-mile endurance challenge in the Lake City, Colorado area. It was created by local ultra runners.
The Challenge Format
Participants start and finish in Lake City. The objective is to travel on foot to 24 specified locations in a set order. These locations are a mix of checkpoints and proof points. Checkpoints are the only places where runners can receive aid from a crew or access a personal drop bag. Proof points require specific verification; instructions are given at a pre-challenge meeting. Runners must plot their own route between each point.
Course Details
The most practical route is estimated to be between 90 and 105 miles long with over 40,000 feet of total elevation gain. Completing the challenge involves summiting five 14,000-foot peaks and six 13,000-foot peaks, traversing rugged terrain in the San Juan Mountains.
Key Rules and Features
The event has a 48-hour time limit to return to Lake City. It is not a standard race: there is no entry fee, no marked course, and no traditional aid stations. Finishers do not receive a medal. Runners are expected to follow wilderness regulations and respect the land. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
