Event Overview
The Heroes of America running event takes place in Columbus, Georgia. The courses utilize a mix of city streets and the Riverwalk area, including the 14th Street Pedestrian Bridge. The marathon route loops through Fort Moore (formerly Fort Benning), while all distances start and finish at the intersection of West 10th Street and Bay Avenue near Woodruff Park. Based on the path widths along the Riverwalk, hand-crank participants are not permitted for the marathon distance.
Available Distances
- Marathon: A 26.2-mile course that is USATF certified (GA17085WC) and serves as a Boston Marathon qualifier.
- Half Marathon: A 13.1-mile course starting and finishing near Woodruff Park.
- 5K: A 3.1-mile race that follows the start of the longer distances.
- Relay Marathon: A 26.2-mile race for two-person teams with an exchange point at the 13.1-mile mark.
Course Information
The terrain is described as reasonably flat with some minor inclines. The marathon route enters Fort Moore at the 14th Street Pedestrian Bridge and exits at mile 17, passing the Iron Works Convention Center before returning to the start line. Relay teams are responsible for their own transportation to the exchange point inside the military installation, which requires proper clearance.
