Event Overview
The Heat the Streets Run & Walk for Warmth is the 19th annual edition of this event. Participants can choose from several activity types: a timed 10K run, a timed 5K run, an untimed 2-mile walk, and a virtual run/walk option. The in-person event takes place in Aksarben Village in Omaha.
Event Details
The event gathers participants to run, walk, and raise awareness for community members needing utility bill assistance. The timed 10K and 5K runs start together, followed by the untimed walk a short time later. A 1.5-hour time limit is suggested for the 5K and 10K participants. On-site vendors will be present, and attendees are encouraged to visit local Aksarben Village businesses.
Awards are given in the timed 5K and 10K events for the first overall male and female finishers. Age group awards are also presented for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place male and female runners in multiple divisions. Virtual participants do not receive awards or swag. Strollers, pets, and service dogs are permitted, with pet owners required to follow city leash laws. Registrations are non-refundable.
Charity & Background
Proceeds from the event benefit local utility assistance programs. Since 2007, Metropolitan Utilities District and Omaha Public Power District have co-hosted the event. Funds are administered by the Dollar Energy Fund, a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit, and distributed between M.U.D.'s Home Fund and OPPD's Energy Assistance Program to help residents in multiple Nebraska and Iowa counties. The event is held in winter to highlight the seasonal struggle to afford heating and electricity. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
