Event overview
The Heart of a Lion is a chip-timed community 5K Run/Walk held on Sunday, August 23, 2026, in Jackson, Michigan. The venue is Ella Sharp Park at 2800 Fourth St., Jackson, MI 49203. The event is part of the 2026 ORS Race Series and will be professionally timed by the Michigan Running Foundation. A minor course change moves the finish line into the southern parking lot in front of the museum; the start line was adjusted accordingly.

Entry, logistics and awards
Registration opens March 1, 2026. Pricing tiers: $30 through August 6 (shirt guaranteed), $35 from August 7 to August 22 (shirts while supplies last), and $40 on race day (no shirt guaranteed). T-shirts are guaranteed for registrations by August 6. Packet pickup is scheduled for Saturday, August 22 at the SOMI office (210 East McDevitt, Jackson) and race day packet pickup is available at Ella Sharp Park. Race day registration is available until shortly before the event.
Overall awards will be given to top male and female finishers in Open and Masters (40+) categories for both the 5k Run and 5k Walk. Age-group awards are offered to the top three in each listed category. No dogs are permitted, except service dogs.
Proceeds benefit Jackson Area 19 Special Olympics to support year-round sports training and competition for persons with intellectual disabilities. Results will be posted live and online. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
