Event overview
The Hamilton Island Triathlon is a sprint triathlon held on Hamilton Island, Great Barrier Reef. The 2026 event weekend includes the Hamilton Island Triathlon, the Junior Hamilton Island Triathlon (for children aged 4-14 years), and the Hamilton Island Ocean Swim. Online entries close Friday 13 November 2026. Race kit collection and compulsory registration take place on the afternoon of Friday 20 November 2026 at the Beach Pavilion. Entry fees for the triathlon are $135 per individual, $160 for a two-person team, and $210 for a three-person team. A one-day Triathlon Australia membership fee of $10 applies to non-members.
Course and rules
The sprint course comprises:
- 750m swim in Catseye Bay
- 20km bike - three laps including the southern part of the island and the airport runway
- 5km run - one loop incorporating marina and resort sides, with two marina laps
Non-drafting rules apply on the bike course and will be enforced by officials. Wetsuits and stinger suits are permitted for the swim regardless of water temperature. The water temperature is expected to be approximately 23 degrees. Any athlete taking a shortcut will face disqualification. One timing chip is issued per team and must be passed between teammates.
Categories, junior events and other notes
Individual competitors must be at least 14 years old as at 14 November 2026; team competitors must be at least 12 years old as at the same date. Age groups and open categories are provided for men and women; team categories include male, female and mixed. Prize money is offered, with a minimum of five participants required in a category to qualify for prizes. Junior race distances are: Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
