Tassal AB Marathon Festival
The Tassal Airlie Beach Marathon Festival is an annual running event held in the Whitsundays region of Northern Queensland. The 13th edition of the festival takes place in July and features various distances along the Airlie Beach and Cannonvale Foreshore. The event is a member of the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS) and utilizes courses formally measured by a B grade measurer to allow for the recognition of records.
The marathon follows a unique four-lap format on off-road terrain, consisting entirely of concrete footpaths and boardwalks. This loop structure allows support teams to see participants multiple times from a single location. The festival offers a wide range of distances and categories:
- 42.2 km Marathon (18+)
- 21.1 km Half Marathon (16+)
- 10 km Fun Run (15+)
- 5 km Fun Run and Corporate Team Challenge (10+)
- 2 km Junior Dash (6+)
- 1 km Kids Run/Walk (4+)
- 1 mile (1.6 km) Magic Mile (6+)
- 3 x 1 km Mixed Relay
The 1 mile event is held on Saturday, while the remaining distances and the mixed relay take place on Sunday. The region is accessible via three airports (Proserpine, Hamilton Island, and Mackay) and is situated on the Bruce Highway between Mackay and Townsville.
