Great Hucklow Fell Race
The Great Hucklow Fell Race is a community organised hill race based in Great Hucklow. The main route is approximately 10 km (6 miles) with about 340 m (1000') of ascent. The course crosses the border between the Dark Peak and White Peak and includes village tracks, fields, moorland and sections of tarmac.
The route begins with a downhill section through the village and passes a water splash early on. Runners climb to the Abney Moor trig point on Durham Edge, traverse Abney Moor, descend over rough ground past a small reservoir, then reach higher moorland before a fast drop to a road. The course continues through a hidden clough into Bretton Clough, passes hillocks and boggy ground, then climbs toward Abney Grange and returns via fields and a short wooded descent to finish at the school. The route crosses private land and permission to use that land is limited to the morning of the race. Competitors should note slippery gravel on some steep tarmac turns.
The event is organised by Great Hucklow village with volunteers from neighbouring villages. More than 30 volunteers typically support registration, marshals, results and refreshments. Entry fees are published for FRA members and non members, and on the day entry is available. Flapjacks are provided at the finish. The event contributes funds to local good causes.
