Great Hucklow Fell Race : event details
The Great Hucklow Fell Race is a village-organised fell race in the Peak District, based at Great Hucklow Primary School. The main race is around 10 km (6 miles) with about 335 m (1,100 ft) of ascent. Minimum age is 18. The event holds a permit and associated UK Athletics insurance from the Fell Runners Association (FRA). Teams are allowed, with male and female team prizes awarded to the fastest first four finishers; the organisers list a pint each at the Queen Anne as the team prize.
Pre-entry and entry-on-the-day are available. Published entry fees are:
- Pre-entry: £8 (FRA member), £9 (non-member)
- Entry on the day: £9 (member), £10 (non-member)
The race is organised by the local community and requires more than 30 volunteers on the day. Organisers state that entry fees contribute hundreds of pounds to local good causes. Free flapjacks are provided at the finish.
Course description
The route starts with a downhill through the village and a track section with a water splash, then climbs to the Abney Moor trig point on Durham Edge. The course crosses Abney Moor, drops to a small reservoir, rises to the moor’s highest point, and includes a fast descent to a road and a short tarmac section. Runners follow a route down a hidden clough into Bretton Clough with water crossings, then climb toward Abney Grange, cross fields, and drop through woods back to the school finish. Parts of the route cross private land and permission is granted only for race day; the surface includes rough ground, wet sections and some steep tarmac with loose gravel.
