The Great Cumbrian Run
The Great Cumbrian Run is a multi-event running festival held in Carlisle. The 42nd edition is scheduled for Sunday 4 October 2026 and includes a half marathon, a 10K road race, and a family fun run. The event is managed by Better and Sport in Action.
Better is a charitable social enterprise that delivers leisure, health and community services and operates over 250 leisure centres in the UK and Ireland. Sport in Action is an events company founded in 2012 that runs races in and around Carlisle and states a focus on athlete safety and event integrity.
The Great Cumbrian 10K starts alongside the half marathon and follows a mainly closed road route through the city centre, up Brampton Road and into Rickerby Park. The route passes the War Memorial to the fallen of the Great War (1914-1918), crosses Memorial Bridge, continues along the new path back to Bitts Park and finishes on the track at Sheepmount Athletics Stadium.
The family fun run covers about a mile and heads through Bitts Park to finish on the track at Sheepmount Athletics Stadium. Course maps are provided for the main races. The event lists several local charity partners including I CAAN, Hospice at Home Carlisle and North Lakeland, Every Life Matters, Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw.
