Grassroots Backyard Ultra
The Grassroots Backyard Ultra is held in Okotoks, Alberta, located approximately 20 minutes south of Calgary. The event follows the traditional backyard format where participants must complete a 6.71 km loop every hour. The course features a mix of the Sheep River pathway and single-track trail, with 34 metres of elevation gain per lap.
The race continues until only one runner remains. To be declared the winner, the last runner must complete one final solo lap after all other participants have dropped out. All other participants are officially recorded as "Did Not Finish" (DNF).
The event offers three distinct registration options:
- Last Runner Standing: The classic backyard format with no predetermined end time.
- Backyard24 (BY24): A timed event limited to 24 hours, covering a total distance of 100 miles.
- Backyard15 (BY15): A timed event limited to 15 hours, covering a total distance of 100.65 km.
Strict rules apply to all formats. Runners must be inside the starting corral before the bell sounds each hour, and they must begin moving forward immediately at the start. No external aid is permitted while a runner is on the course. The minimum age for participation is 16 years old.
The event site is situated near local amenities in Okotoks, including hotels and restaurants. The Lions Campground is located across the river from the start and finish area. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
