Event overview
The Grassroots Backyard Ultra takes place on Saturday, June 27, 2026 in Okotoks, Alberta. This is the fifth instalment of the event. The course uses a 6.71 km loop along the Sheep River pathway with a short section of single-track dirt and about 34 meters of elevation gain per lap. The course is on public pathways and is designated an open course. The current course record is 35 loops, set in August 2024.
Race format and rules
The event follows the Backyard Ultra format where each lap must be completed within one hour. Timed events with limited capacity are offered:
- Backyard15: 15 hours, 100.65 km
- Backyard24: 24 hours, 100 miles
- Backyard Ultra (Last Person Standing) uses the same 6.71 km loop under Backyard rules.
Key rules include completing each 6.71 km lap within one hour, starting the next lap at the top of the hour, and responding to 3, 2, and 1 minute warning whistles before each lap. Runners must be in the starting corral before the bell and start moving at the bell. No aid is allowed while on course. The final remaining runner must complete one additional lap to be declared the winner. Minimum age is 16 on race day.
Registration and logistics
Registration opens September 15, 2025 and closes May 31, 2026 or earlier if events fill. Entry fees vary by event and by registration period. Transfers are permitted until June 1, 2026 for a $20 administration fee. There are no refunds. The course is near local hotels, restaurants, amenities, and the Lions Park campground.
