About the race
The GrassRoots Backyard Ultra is a Last Runner Standing event held on June 26, 2027 in Okotoks, Alberta. Runners complete repeated laps of a measured 6.71 km loop that follows the Sheep River pathway, includes a short section of single-track trail, and has about 34 metres of elevation gain per loop. The format requires runners to complete each loop within one hour; a new lap begins at the top of each hour and the final remaining runner must complete one additional lap to be declared the winner.
Timed events run on the same loop and use the same Backyard rules, with a clock-defined finish for participants in those categories:
- BACKYARD15 (BY15) - 15 Hours, 100.65 km
- BACKYARD24 (BY24) - 24 Hours, 100 Miles
The event lists an age minimum of 16 years on race day. Listed entry prices range from USD 162.20 to USD 209.00; availability is shown as sold out. Registration opened on August 4, 2026 and spots are limited. Registrations are nonrefundable; transfers to another runner are permitted until 11:59 p.m. on June 1, 2027 for a USD 20 administration fee. The course is described as runnable and repetitive, placing emphasis on consistency and the ability to complete one more loop each hour.
