Grasmere Guides Races and Fell Races Programme

Grasmere Lakeland Sports & Show is a traditional event in the English Lake District that includes a programme of fell running known as the Guides Races alongside other Lakeland sports. The event features Cumberland & Westmorland wrestling, fell races, tug of war, paragliding, a fun dog show and hound racing, and it is held at The Showfield, Stock Lane, Grasmere, Cumbria.

The Guides Races have run since the 19th century. The first recorded race in 1868 was held up Silver Howe, a hill of 1,300 feet / 396 metres, and in 1919 the races were run up Butter Crag, height 966 feet / 294 metres. The senior Guides race is part of the English hill championships and has established course records for men and women. The current men’s record is 12 minutes 21 seconds (1978) and the women’s record is 15 minutes 05 seconds (2017). An award of £500 is offered for breaking each adult record.

Entries for races are normally made on the day and close 15 minutes before each race, although pre-registration is available through Events Up North. Age groups are determined by age on the day and proof of age may be required. Local prizes are given to competitors resident in specified parishes, and entrants in local categories may be asked to confirm their parish of residence. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
