Girls on the Run Shenandoah Valley 5K Celebration
Girls on the Run Shenandoah Valley holds an end of season 5K as a celebratory closing event for program participants. The event gives participants of all abilities a tangible sense of accomplishment and each program participant receives a commemorative medal.
The course covers a 5K distance, about 3.1 miles, and uses a combination of roads around Evandale Elementary and Admiral Richard E. Byrd Middle School in Winchester, Virginia. Race marshals will help direct traffic and the council monitors the course with head counts and a safety plan. For safety every participant must wear a race bib and the council pairs participants with a running buddy who completes the entire course alongside them. The event is accessible for people who walk, roll, push, or run; designated parking spots are available.
Registration details note that program participants and coaches are already registered and do not need to register again. Registration for the fall 5K opens in February and registering by October 17 guarantees a race day shirt. Prices increase four weeks before the event. The event includes supplemental activities such as water stations, face painting, happy hair stations, and merchandise for sale. Volunteers are needed for roles including course marshals, water stations, registration, and set up and tear down; volunteers undergo a background check.
