Girls on the Run Sandhills 5K Celebration
The Girls on the Run Sandhills 5K Celebration is the end-of-season, non-competitive event that concludes each 10-week Girls on the Run program. The event features a 5K (3.1 miles) course that participants may walk, run, push, or roll at their own pace. The 5K is not timed and is intended as a celebratory culmination of the season.
Program participants receive a commemorative GOTR 5K medal; other participants receive a GOTR finisher's button. Families, friends, and community members may join the event but must register separately. Program participants who complete the season are already registered and do not need additional registration.
Event logistics include a check-in tent where participants collect bibs and other items, pre-5K activities such as face painting, bib and sign decorating, and a Happy Hair station, and an after party and end-of-year gathering at Red's Corner in Southern Pines. Parking is available on nearby streets and at the J.W. McLauchlin Elementary School parking lot.
Safety procedures require every participant to wear a race bib and be accompanied by a designated 5K buddy. The council monitors the course, conducts head counts, and maintains a safety plan; volunteers appointed through the council undergo a background check. The course is accessible for people with disabilities. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
