Girls on the Run 5K : Sussex County Fairgrounds
Girls on the Run holds an end-of-season celebratory 5K at the Sussex County Fairgrounds in Augusta, New Jersey. The event serves as the culminating activity for program teams and gives participants a clear sense of accomplishment after a season of practice.
The course length is 3.1 miles. The event is described as inclusive: program participants of all abilities can walk, run, roll or push at their own pace. Designated parking is available and accommodations support participation by people with disabilities. Every program participant receives a commemorative medal, and registered finishers receive a T-shirt while supplies last.
Safety procedures include required race bibs, assignment of a running buddy for each participant, course monitoring, head counts and a council safety plan with trained staff and volunteers. Running Buddy is defined as an individual who accompanies a participant for the duration of the course; parent or guardian running buddies are allowed. Liability waivers are included with registration.
The event may be held as a site-based 5K at a regular practice location or as an external community 5K organized by another group. There is also an option to complete a virtual 5K from a location chosen by the participant. Volunteers support setup, registration, course marshaling, water and cheer stations, and other event roles; volunteers appointed through the council undergo background checks.
